I'm not sure I've ever seen the movie in it's entirety, and it's been long enough that I didn't recognize the style, but I loved their silhouttes from the reference photos. They're distinct enough that I figured if you knew them, you'd know them from the shape of them alone. Then I added the eyes and teeth, because the piece seemed to need them.
